Gabriel Helmy is the founder and CEO of The Capacity Specialists and has been in Cambodia since 2008. In Cambodia, Gabriel has consulted and provided training in risk management for a number of microfinance institutions including Prasac, Sathapana, HKL, Amret & AMK.
Gabriel feels strongly about building capacity in risk management in Cambodia and has started the Risk Management Professionals of Cambodia (RMPOC), a discussion group for risk management professionals. In 2014, RMPOC and its members are aiming to convert the group into the Risk Management Association of Cambodia.
Gabriel has worked in the Australian financial sector for almost 20 years, in the fields of banking and risk management. Over 10 years, Gabriel has worked for 3 of the 4 major banks in Australia (National Australia Bank, Westpac & Commonwealth Bank) in the areas of retail banking and business lending.
Gabriel’s last role in Australia was as a prudential supervisor with APRA, the prudential regulator of the Australian financial sector. Gabriel worked with APRA for 8 years in the roles of Senior Analyst and Manager. During this time Gabriel monitored and assessed risk management frameworks for small, medium and large/complex financial institutions in the banking, insurance and retirement fund sectors. Gabriel’s knowledge of risk management spans risk management frameworks, operational risk, credit risk and financial risk.
Gabriel believes in providing people with both the theoretical background and practical application of risk management principles. With this knowledge, risk management principles can be applied in the most appropriate way for the nature, scale and complexity of institutions.
